Most sales booklet printing include on the cover several feature items with page numbers, a title, issue number, and possibly the logo and company name. The reason that catalogs and magazines follow this layout is that the goal of a cover is to encourage readers to open it and make a purchase. Although this is a tried and true layout, it does not make your booklet stand out. If you are looking to create a catalog brand that is truly unique, try straying from the standard cover layout. Be careful to not forget about basic design principles, though. Keep text to a minimum, use vivid images, and be consistent with style when choosing font, colors, and other design options.
One idea for an appealing yet different cover design is to create it to look like one of those photograph books. You know the type – the books you see on coffee tables that contain pictures of a certain subject and only a few words of description or maybe some poetry. Here are some ideas for designing a cover that is unique but also begs to opened:
Use the most captivating photograph of one the most popular or attractive products you sell in the booklet for the entire background of the cover. Print the company name or title across the top, middle, or bottom and possibly your logo. Nothing else. This is what makes the catalog look like it is supposed to be on a coffee table in the living room. Your title should easily stand out from the background photo. You may want to use white letters on a black box, for instance, or place the title on a solid part of the photograph. If you do use a box, try making the edges fuzzy (this is called using a gradient) so that it blends in with the photograph. Use the back cover for several photographs of feature products, the issue number, your logo if not on the front cover, and contact information. You might also want to include page numbers for the items shown and leave room for the mailing information if you will be mailing it directly to the consumer.
